Just because you’re renting doesn’t mean you can’t find the home of your dreams. In fact, one-third of the population rents homes, and home rentals are increasing in each of the 50 states across the U.S. Renting allows you to secure a great house without having to worry about the hassle of ownership. In some cases, it’s cheaper than paying a mortgage. Whether you’re drawn to renting because you’re not ready for home ownership or because you’re not ready to put down roots in a particular city, using these tips can help you to find the best rentals in Athens, Ohio.

  • Establish a budget. Before you even begin searching for that perfect 2-bedroom residence, you need to make sure you can afford it. Take a look at where your money has gone over the last six months. Generally speaking, you shouldn’t spend more than 30 percent of your income on housing. After reviewing your finances, establish a budget and stick to it. This will make it easier to narrow down your search and find a rental that you’re comfortable with.
  • Separate your wants from your needs. Everyone wants a huge outdoor patio space, but do you really need it? Before you start searching for a rental, make a list of the things that you want and the things that you need. The things in your “needs” list will be things like 2 bedrooms, a parking space, or a ground-level apartment. In the “wants” column you might find things like a fireplace, home office, or a gas stove. Be willing to sacrifice a few of your wants in order to secure the things that you need while still staying under budget.

Map out where you spend your time. Do you go from school to work and then back home again or do you frequent a few of the hot spots downtown? Making a map of where you spend the most time is important because it allows you to look for rentals that are close to what you love. You don’t want to be miles and miles away from those places that you frequent.
  • Be prepared for the approval process. While the rental process isn’t nearly as lengthy as a mortgage application, there’s still paperwork involved. You’ll be required to fill out an application, pass a background check, and sign a lease. In some cases, you’ll be able to negotiate the terms of your lease as needed. No matter what you agree upon, make sure that you read the lease thoroughly before signing.

Searching forAthens housing for rent should be easy. By using these tips and tricks, you’ll be prepared to hit the market and find your perfect home.
