Many of us begin each new year with expectations of improving our lives in some way. For college students, the New Year is a time to plan for keeping up healthy habits and learning more about yourself.

Many people make extreme goals or get into routines that are hard to maintain, but it’s important to make sure your goals are realistic and that you’re taking the right steps toward achieving them. Here are some suggestions for keeping your resolutions this year:

Spend More Time Studying

Going into each semester with a solid study routine is key to ensuring that you pass all of your classes. Make sure you’ve carefully selected which courses will be most beneficial to you, and create a schedule that will help you allocate an appropriate amount of time for each subject.

Get Enough Sleep

This one can be tough, but it’s important to make sure you’re well-rested for all of your exams and activities. Most people need around 8 hours of sleep per night, so try to go to bed and wake up at the same time each day to help regulate your sleep/wake cycle. Try to find a balance between sleeping, social activities, homework, and everything else you have going on. Finding the perfect Court street apartment can make a huge difference in your quality of sleep.

Don’t Be Afraid to Make Mistakes

Everyone has bad days, but it’s important not to let them get the best of you. Try your hardest until you learn what works and what doesn’t. If something doesn’t work out, don’t beat yourself up about it too much – just try something new next time.

Manage Your Stress

This one can be tough, but there are many ways to manage stress while in college. Make sure you’re taking breaks between classes, not overdoing it when it comes to studying, and finding ways to relieve stress like exercising regularly to help release any built-up tension.

Eat Healthy and Stay Active

This is another important one – keeping your body healthy will help you stay focused and productive. Make sure you’re eating a balanced diet with plenty of fruits and vegetables, and try to get in at least 30 minutes of exercise a few times per week. You can join an intramural team, take a fitness class, or  just go for a walk around your campus.

Spend Time with Family and Friends

College can be a lonely experience if you don’t make an effort to connect with others.  Make sure you’re keeping in touch with your friends and family back home. If they live close by, try to visit them at least once per week or set up a regular study date. If they live far away, make an effort to video chat or write letters when possible.

Stay Organized

This one is key for keeping your stress levels down. Make a to-do list and stick to it, and invest in a good planner to help you keep track of your appointments and deadlines.  It may also be helpful to color code different subjects in your planner so that you can easily see how much time you have for each.

Following these resolutions can be difficult, but it’s definitely worth it in the end! Just remember to take things one step at a time and to be patient with yourself.
