Walking to and from class will give you a little bit of a workout without making you all sweaty when you get to your destination. If you’re going to a friend’s party, keep the walking going. There’s no need to drive or take an Uber if you’re staying in Athens, so take advantage of the hilly terrain and burn some calories!
Hit the Trails!
Those same hills that define Athens stretch out into the Appalachians, blessing this part of the country with some of the most beautiful scenery in the country. Not only are the hills beautiful, but they provide a great opportunity to pull your nose out of those books and get some exercise. Get some friends together and walk to The Ridges. Easily accessible from downtown Athens, you have some terrific hikes right at your doorstep. Another great option is The Hockhocking Adena Bikeway. At 21 miles in length, this scenic biking and hiking path meanders across city, country, and forest environments for an active and comprehensive view of the whole area.

Don’t forget that you have a world-class gym right next door at the university! Furthermore, after you’ve paid tuition, it’s totally free! If you haven’t yet taken advantage of what WellWorks Fitness Center has to offer, you’ve got a lot to catch up on. Kitted out with tons of equipment like free weights and machines, you can get your own workout in, or you can take yoga, kickboxing, and other kinds of classes. They offer workshops in nutrition as well, and there’s always someone on staff to help you achieve your fitness goals. They even have massage therapists on hand to help you recover after a workout or a particularly challenging and stressful midterm.
