Get Outside and Explore
Even though midterms still last all semester, spring brings a little fresh air and sunshine to take the edge off. Plus, Athens is a great spot to get outside without having to travel too far.
Hike Hocking Hills State Park
If you haven’t visited Hocking Hills yet, you’re missing out. A 45-minute drive from Athens, the park is full of waterfalls, cliffs, and caves. If you’re into hiking, Ash Cave is a pretty relaxed hike to ease into the season. If you’re up for more of a challenge, Old Man’s Cave is great too. You can find beautiful spring wildflowers here or at the Bluebell Preserve.
Discover Strouds Run State Park
Strouds Run is a little closer to campus and only a short drive from Athens. This is a fantastic spot for hiking, kayaking, or a weekend campout with friends. Dow Lake, Lakeview Trail, and the Trace Trail and Finger Rock Loop are good hiking spots. If you’re an animal lover, don’t miss Wildcat Hollow either. While not officially part of Strouds Run, it’s close enough to add to your trip.
Host a Picnic with Friends
Looking for something more chill? Picnics are a great way to spend time with your crew and enjoy the weather. Whether you’re packing a lunch from home, or eating out, the College Green or Bicentennial Park are prime spots for hosting. If you want the real signal for spring, Ohio University’s cherry blossoms are expected to bloom on March 31!

Dinner
For dinner, you need to experience Jackie O’s. They’ve got it all: delicious pasta, pizzas, burgers, and if you’re vegetarian, fantastic falafel and tofu options. If you’re over 21, they also brew their own beer and have a great outdoor patio.

Finish celebrating the warm weather with a trip to Whit’s Frozen Custard. Their custard is absolutely delicious. You can have a classic scoop or make it into a sundae, milkshake, float, or the famous Whitser.
